How to clean alloy wheels

Alloy wheels are fairly easy to clean, and regularly cleaning them can help maintain their shine and prevent corrosion. Once you have gathered everything from the list above, it is time to get to work. Follow these steps to make your alloy wheels sparkle.

Step 1: Rinse the wheels

Use a hose or pressure washer to remove loose dust, debris or dirt. Start from the top and work your way down to ensure the dirt runs off the wheel effectively.

Step 2: Apply wheel cleaner

Next, spray a dedicated alloy wheel cleaner evenly over the wheel surface, paying special attention to stubborn brake dust or any grimy spots.

Make sure you use a specialist alloy wheel cleaner. While you may be tempted to use household alternatives like WD40 or vinegar, but opt for a specialist alloy wheel cleaner if you want a bright shine.

Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes, and follow the specific instructions on the product for the best results.

Step 3: Scrub gently

Using a soft-bristled brush, gently scrub the surface of your alloys. Make sure to focus on crevices around the lug nuts and spokes.

For tighter spots, consider using a smaller detail brush to scrub away any dirt or grime that has gathered. You may need to scrub a little harder in these spots.

Step 4: Rinse thoroughly

From here, use your hose or pressure washer to rinse away the cleaner and loose grime. Start from the top and work your way down to ensure an efficient clean. Repeat this a few times to ensure no residue is left over to prevent streaks.

Step 5: Dry the wheels

Grab your microfibre cloth and dry the wheels, this will help to prevent any water spots when the wheels are dry. Make sure you pat dry any intricate edges and details.

Step 6: Apply wax or sealant

Apply a thin wax or wheel sealant layer if you want added protection. Doing this will help protect your alloy wheels from debris, which can cause scratches, scuffs, and corrosion. Buff it with a soft cloth for a lasting shine and to repel dirt.
